Percussion students learn, compete at convention

Student Success – Richland College percussion students Derek Jones, Emylee Lucas, Zach Ogles, Spencer Orrick and Daniel Sanchez participated in the International Percussive Arts Society Convention in Austin, Oct. 31-Nov. 3, where they experienced class and concert sessions with more than 100 international music recording artist drummers, percussionists, ensembles, and music educators performing pop, jazz, world, and symphonic music styles. Spencer Orrick, Richland College music major, performed “Wind in the Bamboo Grove” by Keiko Abe on the marimba in the student’s competition debut for the society’s Collegiate Solo Marimba Competition, competing with college music majors from across the U.S. and around the world. Derrick Logozzo, Richland College director of instrumental music, performed new music for steel band in a Showcase Concert with the All-Star Steel Band.
